A University of Oslo study looked at blood proteins in people with celiac disease, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system reacts adversely to gluten. Researchers analyzed 264 blood and tissue samples collected before treatment and after one year on a gluten-free diet. They identified 24 proteins associated with celiac disease, and nine were particularly linked to intestinal damage. The team says current antibody tests can be less informative after patients start a gluten-free diet, so new biomarkers may help provide a clearer picture of inflammation and healing. More studies are needed before clinical use.
