E220–E228 — Sulphites family

A family of preservatives — sulphur dioxide (E220), sodium sulphite (E221), sodium bisulphite (E222), sodium metabisulphite (E223), potassium metabisulphite (E224), calcium sulphite (E226), calcium bisulphite (E227) and potassium bisulphite (E228) — that prevent browning and microbial growth.

Allergen connection

Sulphites can trigger asthma-like reactions in sensitive people. Both the EU and US require declaration above 10 mg/kg (“contains sulphites”). Any E-number from E220 to E228 on a label means the product falls under Scallergy’s sulphites matching.

Where you'll see it

Let the scanner read the E-numbers

Scallergy checks ingredient lists — including allergen-derived additives and hydrolysed proteins — against your personal allergen profile, and tells you honestly when data is missing.
